UCLA Lab School & Children’s Music Workshop

A meaningful chapter in the Children’s Music Workshop story.

Generations of young musicians learned, rehearsed, and performed through the instrumental music program at UCLA Lab School. That experience continues to shape the work ahead.

Program Update

Children’s Music Workshop is no longer operating the UCLA Lab School morning instrumental music program.

After many years of teaching and directing instrumental music at UCLA Lab School, I have stepped away from operating the morning program.

Families seeking current information about instrumental music at UCLA Lab School should contact the school directly.

A Note to UCLA Lab School Families

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your children’s musical lives.

UCLA Lab School has been an important part of the Children’s Music Workshop story. I am grateful to the students, families, teachers, and school community who trusted us with so many children’s first experiences making music.

Although our role in the morning program has ended, the lessons learned from those years — how young musicians begin, what keeps them engaged, and how individual learning leads to successful ensemble playing — continue to shape everything we are building next.

The Larger Children’s Music Workshop Story

Helping young musicians begin well — and keep moving forward.

The UCLA Lab School program was one part of a broader Children’s Music Workshop mission: giving young musicians practical instruction, strong learning materials, and meaningful opportunities to grow through music.

School MusicAI

Learn individually. Play together.

School Music AI is an emerging music education project exploring how artificial intelligence can support individualized instrumental learning while keeping teachers, rehearsals, and live music-making at the center. The goal is to help young musicians receive useful support between lessons and rehearsals so they arrive better prepared to make music together.

Individual Support

Help with notes, rhythms, fingerings, musical vocabulary, practice habits, and other fundamentals beginning musicians encounter as they learn.

Built for Real Ensembles

The technology is intended to strengthen preparation for lessons, rehearsals, and performances — not replace teachers or the experience of playing together.

Grounded in Classroom Experience

The project grows directly from decades of teaching, curriculum development, program leadership, publishing, and firsthand work with beginning instrumentalists.

The Publishing Legacy

Classroom experience also became Music Fun Books.

The same teaching experience that shaped Children’s Music Workshop led to Music Fun Books — instructional books, repertoire, free resources, audio, video lessons, and teacher materials created for young musicians.
