Topanga Elementary School Instrumental Music Program

The Topanga Elementary School Instrumental Music Program is open to all students in grades one through five.

For more than twenty years, Topanga’s award winnng program has been directed by Larry Newman. Kathy Shaw and Wendy Mazon are the music specialists.

Classes are offered every Friday during regular school hours beginning on September 26, 2014. Classes run through the school year, culminating with a school orchestra concert on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 6:30 PM.

To best accommodate all the students, the final schedule will be determined when enrollment is complete. Students will be notified of their lesson time by their classroom teacher and by e-mail.

First graders may take the violin or recorder. (What is a recorder?)

Violins are fit to size the student (1/8 and 1/4 violins are most common for first graders). Recorders are provided free with enrollment in the class.

Second graders may choose ukulele, violin, recorder, flute, clarinet, trumpet or p-Bone mini.

Third through fifth graders may choose ukulele, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, p-Bone mini or trombone.

A one-time music donation for the 2014-2015 school year of $495 per student is requested to help cover the instructional costs of this year’s instrumental music program. In addition to weekly lessons, this fee also covers all books, sheet music and basic supplies which your child is given.
Limited financial aid is available to those who request assistance and every attempt will be made to see that all students who wish to learn an instrument are given the opportunity. No child will be denied the opportunity to participate due to financial concerns.

The only other expense will be the lease, rental or purchase of the instrument. Recorders are provided free with enrollment.

Through special arrangements with The Instrument Place, instruments are available for purchase, rent or lease-to-own at up to 45% off the retail price for participating music students. Order now and get free delivery of the instrument to school for the first lesson on September 26.

Visit The Instrument Place for more information and to place your order for delivery to school in time for the first lesson.

No musical experience is required to enroll in a beginning class. Students with some prior experience will be placed in an intermediate or advanced level ensemble depending on ability.
