Topanga Elementary School Instrumental Music Program
The 2015 -2016 Topanga Elementary School Instrumental Music Program is open to all students in grades one through five.
For more than twenty years, Topanga’s award-winning program has been directed by Larry Newman.
Classes are offered every Friday during regular school hours beginning on Friday, October 2, 2015. Classes run through the school year, culminating with a school orchestra concert on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 6:30 PM.
An educational music assembly featuring live performances of the various orchestra instruments by Topanga students and music teachers will be presented on Tuesday, September 8 at 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM in the auditorium.
• First graders may take the violin or recorder. (What is a recorder?)
Violins are fit to size the student (1/8 and 1/4 violins are most common for first graders). Recorders are provided free with enrollment in the class.
• Second graders may choose ukulele, violin, recorder, flute, clarinet, trumpet or p-Bone mini.
• Third through fifth graders may choose ukulele, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, p-Bone mini or trombone.
To best accommodate all the students, the final schedule will be determined when enrollment is complete. Students will be notified of their lesson time by their classroom teacher and by e-mail.
A one-time music donation for the 2015-2016 school year of $495 per student is requested to help cover the instructional costs of this year’s instrumental music program. This fee covers weekly music instruction for the entire 2015 – 2016 school year. In addition, a $25 music fee covers all music, books and basic supplies which your child is given throughout the year. The only other expenses will be the lease, rental or purchase of the instrument. Instruments are available for up to 45% off the retail price for participating music students through our instrument supplier. Order online now and get free delivery to school for the first lesson. Visit The Instrument Place to place your order.
Limited financial aid is available to those who request assistance and every attempt will be made to see that all students who wish to learn an instrument are given the opportunity. No child will be denied the opportunity to participate due to financial concerns.
No musical experience is required to enroll in a beginning class. Students with some prior experience will be placed in an intermediate or advanced level ensemble depending on ability.
Class size is limited and priority is given to the earliest applicants. Please complete the online application to reserve a spot.
Once the application has been filled out, please print it and follow-up by mailing it along with your check.
Mail your payment in the amount of $520 to:
