The Topanga Elementary
School Instrumental Music Program is open to all students
in grades one through six.
This award winnng
program is directed by Larry Newman. Music teaching specialists
are Charlene Welch (violin and cello), & Dan
Ubick (guitar) and Reinhold Schwarzwald (woodwinds, brass and African drumming).
Guitar classes are offered every Monday afternoon during regular school hours.
Woodwind, brass, strings and African drumming classes are offered each Thursday afternoon during regular school hours and after school.

To best accommodate all the students, the final schedule will be
determined when enrollment is complete. Students will be notified
of their lesson time by their classroom teacher and by e-mail.
No musical experience is required to enroll in a beginning class.
Students with some prior experience will be placed in an intermediate
or advanced level ensemble depending on ability.
FIRST GRADE MUSIC CLASSES
First graders may take either the violin or African Drumming class.
Both choices are a great first time introduction to music
making for young students. Violins are fit to size the student (1/8
and 1/4 violins are most common for first graders). Space is limited
so please sign-up ASAP to reserve a spot.
GRADES TWO THROUGH SIX CLASSES
Second graders may choose violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet or African drumming.
Third through sixth graders may choose guitar, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, baritone horn or African drumming.
Classes begin the first week of October. Classes run through
the school year, culminating with a school orchestra concert
in June 2011.
A one-time music fee
of $410 is requested to help cover the instructional costs
of this year’s instrumental music program.
This fee includes all music, books and basic supplies which
your child is given.
The only other expense will be the lease, rental or purchase
of the instrument.
Recorders are provided free with enrollment.
Through special arrangements with a local music retailer, instruments
are available for purchase, rent or lease-to-own at up to 45%
off the retail price for participating music students.
