Kenter Canyon Charter Elementary School Instrumental Music Program
The 2017 – 2018 Kenter Canyon Charter Elementary School Instrumental Music Program is open to all students in grades one through five.
For the past thirty years, our award-winning Kenter Canyon School Orchestra program has been directed by Larry Newman. Beginning this year, the program is being offered after school rather than during the regular school day as in past years. But as always, instruction is provided by the outstanding faculty of Children’s Music Workshop and directed by Larry Newman.
Weekly classes are offered for 30 to 40 minutes each Wednesday after school.
Instruction is available on violin, cello, ukulele, recorder, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, p-Bone mini, baritone horn, and trombone.
• First graders may only choose the violin or recorder. Recorders are provided free with enrollment in the class.
• Second graders may choose violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet, or p-Bone mini.
• Third, fourth and fifth graders may choose violin, cello, ukulele, flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, p-Bone mini or trombone.
No musical experience is required to enroll in a beginning class.
Students with some prior experience will be placed in an intermediate or advanced level ensemble depending on ability.
To best accommodate all the students, the final schedule will be determined when enrollment is complete. Students will be notified of their lesson time by e-mail a few days before the start of classes on September 27.
Instruction begins on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 and runs through the school year, culminating with a spring concert on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 4:00 PM..
A one-time music fee of $565 is requested to cover the instructional costs of this year’s instrumental music program. This fee covers all music, books and basic supplies which your child is given. The only other expense will be the lease, rental or purchase of the instrument. Order your instrument online now through The Instrument Place and they will deliver free to school for the first lesson.
Classes are for beginning students with no prior experience on their chosen instrument as well as for students with prior lessons and experience.
Thirty to forty minute classes will take place on Wednesdays after school between the hours of 3:00 PM and 5:30 PM beginning on Wednesday, September 27, 2017. The year culminates with a spring concert on Wednesday, May 23, 2018.
The exact lesson schedule for Wednesday afternoons will be determined when enrollment is complete. Please have your child’s schedule clear for a 30 – 40 minute lesson during this time block of 3:00 PM through 5:30 PM. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The final schedule of classes will be emailed to all applicants prior to the first day of class. To help with planning, please note that first grade music classes will be held immediately after dismissal at 3:00 PM. For older students waiting to take a later lesson, the LAUSD Youth Services Program provides free, supervised after school care on the school playground from school dismissal time each day until 6 P.M. This option is available for students in grades 2 through 5. STAR also runs a paid after school child-care program. Or, parents can take their child home at dismissal and return back to school at the lesson time.
