You might have seen on channel 35 an incredible program
about the All Schools Elementary Honor Orchestra. I want to thank
channel 35 for airing it.
Larry Newman loves music and his belief in its power as a learning
tool has proved to be a testament to the power of individual citizens
to effect change in their communities. He is a Pacific Palisades resident.
In 1992, Larry founded the Children’s Music Workshop with the
hope of spreading his passion for music to children throughout Los Angeles.
Serving over two dozen public and private schools today - and hundreds
of students - the company is an inspirational reminder of the importance
of musical education within our school curriculum.
Because of the workshop, these students have become fine musicians
with an ear for melody and a passion for learning. To honor their achievement,
in May of last year Larry directed the Tenth Annual All Schools Elementary
Honor Orchestra - the only program of its kind.
The orchestra brought together 135 of our most talented young musicians
to bring to life some of the most treasured pieces of musical history.
It is no wonder then, that the orchestra was honored with the Los Angeles
Area Emmy Award for the Children/Youth Programming category.
Larry’s work and accomplishment haven’t stopped with the orchestra
production and the Emmy award. Just last March, sixteen of Larry’s
students at the Children’s Music Workshop won Los Angeles City Elementary
Music Association scholarships for excellence in musical achievements.
These students competed with students from across the LAUSD’s more
than 400 elementary schools. And with Larry’s guidance, came
away with the highest recognition of their musical talent.
Time and again, Larry has proven his commitment to the cause of advancing
music education within our communities. His devotion to the children
of LA is exemplary. And for that we honor and thank Larry here today
and welcome his students.
Larry, the City of Los Angeles is presenting you this as the director
of the All Schools Elementary Honor Orchestra. You have brought happiness
and joy and inspiration into the lives of every student you teach and
every person who listens to your melodies.
Thank you for sharing this special gift of music with the world and
congratulations on your Emmy award.
